Director

Rob Phillips has been directing the choirs at Clear Springs since it opened in 2007. Prior to that he directed at Clear Lake High School and Pasadena Dobie High School. Mr. Phillips is a Clear Creek High School graduate and a member of the 1989 Texas All-State Choir. Mr. Phillips sings with the St. Paul's Choir at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Houston, which recently completed its residency at the Truro Cathedral in Cornwall, UK. He has sung with and directed the Bay Area Chorus of Greater Houston, and was the bass soloist in the BAC's 2022 performance of Gounod's St. Cecelia Mass.​ He has degrees from Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas, and the University of Houston-Clear Lake. His wife Rachel is an engineer-manager with Leidos at NASA. They have two children, Lyra and Micah, who attend Campbell Elementary School.

David Smith was awarded the degree  Master of Music in Vocal Performance from the Moores School of Music at the University of Houston.  He also holds a baccalaureate degree from Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas.  His vocal instructors have been Drs. Timothy Jones, Joyce Farwell, Oliver Worthington, and Bruce Cain.

Mr. Smith's performing career has included roles in My Fair Lady, On the Twentieth Century, Galveston!, Don Giovanni, Amahl and the Night Visitors, Die Fledermaus, Cosi fan tutte, Gianni Schicchi, The Gondoliers, The Cunning Little Vixen, Il viaggio a Reims, The Grapes of Wrath, and Les Plaisirs des Versailles.  He has also performed in numerous concerts in Houston, Clear Lake, and Texas City.

In addition to maintaining an active performing schedule, he also serves for several schools in Clear Creek ISD.  Voice lessons are given at these schools during and after school.  Mr. Smith also teaches private voice lessons through his Clear Lake Voices studio.

Mr. Smith has been married for fourteen years to his college sweetheart, who is the assistant choir director at Clear Creek High School and an accomplished soprano.  They have two young boys, Jackson and Grayson, a dog and two cats, which makes for a very busy household!  The Smith Family attends Clear Lake United Methodist Church and are frequent soloists for Sunday services.  In the rare case of having some spare time, Mr. Smith is an avid reader of historical and science fiction novels and plays computer games.  Mr. Smith also loves tennis and football and played competitive tennis at the college level before singing and parenthood took up all his practice time.

David Ferguson, tenor, from Conroe, Texas is a current resident of Houston, Texas where he received his Bachelor of Music Degree in Vocal Performance from the University of Houston Moores School of Music where he studied with Professor Hector Vasquez. While at UH, David performed as “Orpheus” in Offenbach’s Orpheus in the Underworld, The Mayor in Britten’s Albert Herring and Dandy in Moore’s The Ballad of Baby Doe and Trip the premiere of School for Scandal by Robert Nelson. During his at UH, he also was given the opportunity to study at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater “Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy” in Leipzig Germany. While there he sang recitals at the school as well as a part of a summer music series at the Hubertusburg Castle. David is also an active member of the Houston Grand Opera Chorus. You can see him next fall in the Professional American premiere of The Wreckers by Dame Ethyl Smith.
Outside of opera, David also enjoys singing sacred and choral music. Starting in 2016, he began singing for churches all over the Houston area for church services and Evensongs. Most notably, he has performed scenes from Handel’s Messiah, and arias from Mendelssohn’s Elijah at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church and was a part of the professional ensemble, Chorus Angelorum for three years. Most recently, David joined the St, Paul’s Choir in their journey to England where they were the choir-in-residence at the Truro Cathedral as well as sang Evensong for St. Paul’s London. He continues to explore new way to express his love for oratorio and the Sacred repertoire.
Aside from performing himself, David also has become and up-and-coming voice teacher in the Houston area. During his first year, he guided two students to the coveted Texas All-state Choir as well as coached students through musicals, music school auditions and many other forms of classical and pop music. David’s students have also consistently made superior ratings at Solo and Ensemble contests, advance to State Solo and Ensemble, and most importantly, learn to become more invested and passionate about music.
Outside of music, David enjoys cooking for friends, continuing to learn the German language, going to the gym, and running. He has a cat named Wallace, and lives in Uptown Houston
